BACK PAIN Q & A

How Common is Back Pain?
Back pain is extremely common, with 8 out of 10 people becoming afflicted in their lifetime. Because the reasons for back pain can vary and are so common, nearly everyone ends up with at least short term back pain at some point during their lifetime. While some cases of back pain quickly resolve on their own, that’s unusual. In most cases, back pain will become worse if ignored. Ignoring back pain may result in long term disability.

Why Does Back Pain Happen?
Back pain occurs for a wide range of reasons, including:

  • Poor bio-mechanics (mostly)
  • Arthritis
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Auto accidents
  • Lifting heavy objects
  • Poor posture
  • Obesity leading to spinal misalignment
  • Sciatica
  • Scoliosis and other congenital conditions
  • Muscle weakness
  • Stiff spine
  • Muscle imbalances

How is Back Pain Diagnosed?
Dr. Linder begins by making a proper diagnosis using tools like:

  • A hands-on exam
  • Digital postural analysis
  • A digital range of motion exam
  • A functional movement exam
  • Orthopedic/neurologic tests

These tools allow Dr. Linder to identify the painful tissue and diagnose the faulty bio-mechanics allowing him to customize an individual treatment plan based on the cause of the pain.

Patient input is also very important in making an accurate diagnosis. Dr. Linder will ask a series of questions about pain location, pain intensity, pain frequency, and pain duration to further help him customize a treatment plan.

How is Back Pain Treated?
The first part of back pain treatment is focused on immediate relief. This phase includes addressing pain through spinal manipulation, specialized fascial manipulation, home pain relief exercises.

Once the patient starts to feel better, corrective care is the focus. During this phase, the treatments may decrease in frequency. Patient care focuses on improving strength, coordination, posture and overall wellness by adding corrective exercises prescribed by Dr. Linder at home. Corrective care addresses the cause of spinal pain, movement dysfunction, and includes protocols to improve how the patient carries him/herself and moves.

Once the patient is completely pain-free, wellness back pain care begins. This includes maintaining a healthy lifestyle as well as having periodic chiropractic care appointments as a preventive care measure. With chiropractic care, patients can escape their back pain in a natural way.
